DNI on the mobile: how to carry it and when it is legal

In recent years, the rise of technology has become a reality for which, on occasions, society itself is not fully prepared. That is precisely what happens when carrying the ID on the mobile. It seems logical that in a world increasingly turned towards the virtual, in all senses, this is a possibility within everyone's reach. After all, today many tasks are done without a physical presence, from carrying out all kinds of procedures to even working or, why not say it, maintaining all kinds of relationships with other people.

In this situation, The most reasonable thing would be to have your own identity document that guarantees who we are the same in the virtual world. (or digital, which amounts to the same thing) just as is required in the real, physical world. However, and as we said, sometimes those who are in charge are a step behind what they should be. In this article we are going to try to clarify everything related to the possibility of carrying the DNI on the mobile, its validity and what will happen, presumably, in the future.

The need to carry the ID on the mobile

Traditionally, any adult has been obliged to always carry their own DNI (National Identity Document) or something similar, depending on the case, such as a passport, driver's license, etc. Or what is the same, legal proof that you are who you really say you are. Carrying our documentation is not only essential, but also necessary when carrying out many procedures of all kinds.

Today, on the contrary, a large part of the population spends as much time busy in the digital world (Internet) as in what we could call real life. Although sometimes we are not even aware of it, it is so. Hence how important it is, or at least should be, to have an ID that could simply be carried on your mobile phone.

Is it legal to carry the ID on the mobile?

The quick and short answer to this question, which is, after all, the crux of this matter, would be simple: no.. To this day, there is still no proof as such that guarantees our identity simply by carrying the corresponding mobile device in our pocket. It seems that this will soon be the case, as we will see below, but at the moment it is only a project in development.

In other words: Carrying a photo of the DNI (or other equivalent document) on the mobile phone is not legally valid not at all. It can be useful in certain cases, but it does not have substantive guarantees in any sense. It must be taken into account that, if it were as simple as that, an image, manipulating the matter would be the order of the day. Almost anyone with a minimal knowledge of Photoshop could easily impersonate an identity, with all the risks to themselves and others that would entail.

The idea of carrying the DNI on the mobile

Faced with the pressing need to regulate the identity situation of people on a virtual level, the authorities announced their intention to launch a new European DNI, also known as DNI 4.0, which would cover digital reality in the same way as physical reality. A priori, it was a practical and useful idea, thanks to which the DNI could be permanently carried on the mobile, just as today is done with so many things (tickets for concerts and shows, for example).

To do this, we would simply have to download an application with the same name and in this way we would always be perfectly identified just by carrying the mobile phone with us. Or in other words, you could practically leave your wallet at home, whoever decided on it. What actually happens is that this innovation, perfect for a lot in theory, must be giving the odd problem in practice. Simply for a very simple reason: Although it was promised that this DNI 4.0 would be ready around 2022, at this time it is still not possible to go to a police station to request it. And it does not have a definitive date to enter into force.

The possibility of carrying other similar documents on the mobile

The exact reason why this DNI 4.0 is not yet available is unknown. No reasons have been given for the delay in its release. It is to be imagined that the fact of implementing such a renewal for all citizens can be a great job at the governmental level. But this assumption collides with another reality that, contrary to the one at hand, is already a possibility today.

DNI on the mobile: how to carry it and when it is legal

We are talking about the driver's license. Although it can sometimes be criticized by some drivers, it must be recognized that the DGT (General Directorate of Traffic) has been faster and more effective on this occasion, allowing all those vehicle owners who have the opportunity to carry both your driver's license and the mandatory papers of the car or motorcycle that you have on your mobile. In other words, the same thing that was said about the DNI itself, but that has not yet been fulfilled.

In addition to what we have already mentioned, other necessary vehicle information also has its digital equivalent, such as all the documentation corresponding to the ITV (the inspection that must be passed to have a vehicle in circulation), the insurance papers or the environmental badge . That is, everything that is mandatory to present if, for example, we are stopped by the Police. Of course, it should be made clear that this digital version does not apply to all of Europe, contrary to what, a priori, will happen with DNI 4,0, but rather It is only valid for Spanish territory. Something that drivers who are going to travel with their vehicle to other places in Europe and abroad in general should keep in mind.
