How to solve the APPCRASH problem

APPCRASH

When an application stops working and shows us an error message, we find what is called crash of an application, appcrash for its English terms. This problem usually affects mainly versions of Windows 7 and Windows 8, but very sporadically, we can also find it in older Windows 10 versions.

Many are the users who criticize Windows due to the different operating problems that it usually presents throughout its versions, without taking into account that Microsoft creates and maintains an operating system that can be installed in millions of different configurations. Apple, however, develops an operating system for specific hardware.

If Apple did the same, it would run into the same problems as Microsoft. Another example of developing an operating system for millions of different configurations is found in Android. This operating system, like Microsoft, has to adapt the specific configuration of the device that is running it, hence, sometimes, may present malfunctions.

Once we know the reasons why iOS and macOS can present a higher stability than what we can find in Windows or Android, let's see how we can solve the application crash, how to solve the APPCRASH problem.

Identify the problem

Computer components

The culprits of this problem are several and they are not always solved in the same way. Because Windows is compatible with a large number of hardware components, this problem can be found in a component of the device that is stopping working, it does it erratically, the drivers are not up to date...

Another problem that can cause this problem is in the application itself. Applications for Windows, like any other application for other operating systems, use the system libraries to be able to work without having to include them in the installation.

If these libraries are not available on the computer, the application may not function properly and displays an error message known as APPCRASH. If the problem has started to show after formatting your computer, the problem is most likely in the libraries.

Error message

The error message associated with the crash of an application has the following format:

Once we have verified that the error message is related to the crash of an application, below we will show you the methods to follow to solve it.

Solve the APPCRASH problem

Disable antivirus

Coronavirus

Depending on the application that has the problem, the problem may be related to the antivirus. If we fully trust the application, the first step we must do is disable antivirus and run the application again.

Some antivirus programs do not directly block an application that they consider malicious, they simply collide with the application at the time of execution because it performs actions that the antivirus considers abnormal.

Performance options

Performance options

Another option that we must consider and that is related to malicious software is found in the performance options when running an application. Windows makes Data Execution Prevention (DEP) available to us.

This feature allows the user to protect themselves against viruses and other threats while the applications are running. This function is related to the previous one, since it analyzes all the processes that the application does while it is running.

Natively, this function is activated in Windows, but we can deactivate it for the application that has stopped working performing the steps that we detail below:

  • We open the file explorer, we place the mouse in Team, press the right button and select Properties.
  • Within Properties, we access Advanced System Settings - Advanced Options.
  • In this section, click on Performance - Data Execution Prevention.
  • Finally, we select the box Enable DEP for all programs and services except those you select: and we select the application that is presenting operating problems.

Hardware issues

Bootable memory

To rule out that it is a hardware problem, we must start our computer in failsafe mode. This mode loads Windows with the basic system drivers, without taking any advantage of the hardware that we have installed.

If we start our computer in Safe Mode and the application works correctly, the problem is in one of the hardware components of our computer. The problem we find ourselves with is that we must find out which is the cause.

There are two hardware components that usually stop working or do it erratically: RAM and graphics card. If our computer has more than one memory module, we can open it, extract one and check if the application works. If it is about the graphic integrated in the equipment, the solution is to try a dedicated graphic, the same happens if the graphic is dedicated and not the one included on the motherboard.

Update drivers

Manufacturers periodically release updates to their products, mainly peripherals related to system graphics, to offer a higher performance and troubleshoot malfunctions, so it is always advisable to update the drivers periodically.

If we install the manufacturer's software, it is in charge of notifying us if we have a new update pending update. If so, it is the first thing we must do to download that the malfunction of an application it is due to a simple driver problem.

Libraries (dll) are missing

dll libraries

If none of the solutions that we have proposed solves the problem, this one will. As I mentioned above, the system libraries are resources used by the applications that we install in order to run. If these are not installed, the applications cannot start and crash.

At the beginning of this article, I mentioned that the APPCRASH problem usually affects Windows 7 and Windows 8.x managed computers mainly as well as some older versions of Windows 10.

With the release of Windows 10, Microsoft cchanged the way they install system libraries, installing them at all times without being necessary by any specific application.

Surely on more than one occasion, you have come across an application that claims to need Microsoft. NET Framework or the latest version of Microsoft DirectX. To download the latest version of Microsoft .NET Framework you can do it through this link. If we want to download the latest version of Microsoft DirectX we do it from here.

If even so, the problem is still not solved, the last option is to install MSVCR100.dll, one of the most used libraries in Windows and that we can download from this link.

We always must download this series of add-ons directly from the Microsoft website, in order to prevent other people's friends from introducing malicious software on our computer.
