Nearby Share will now be Quick Share

Google recently announced that Nearby Share, your service for sharing files between Android devices, will now be called Quick Share. This decision was made in collaboration with Samsung, since Quick Share was the name that this company used for its own application with the same functionality. With this unification, Nearby Share will now be Quick Share and will become the default option for sharing content between Android and Chrome OS devices.

The goal behind this rebranding is create a more consistent and integrated Google file transfer experience throughout the Android ecosystem. This way, users will be able to share files, photos, videos and more between a wider variety of devices, even between phones and computers from different manufacturers.

How Quick Share works

Nearby Share operation.

Quick Share will allow users Quickly find nearby devices and send content to them wirelessly. The experience will be very similar to what Nearby Share offered, as it will simply change the name and icon of the application.

To use Quick Share, Both devices must have the function activated and be connected to the same Wi-Fi network or have Bluetooth activated. Once a device sends a file sharing request, the recipient must accept it for the file transfer to complete.

Like Nearby Share, Quick Share will have privacy and security settings. Users will be able to control who can see their file-sharing device, as well as set a visibility time limit. This will maintain privacy when sharing files in public spaces.

When will the launch be

QuickShare

It is expected that QuickShare begin implementation in February 2024, completely replacing Nearby Share. It will initially arrive on devices with Android 6.0 or higher that have Nearby Share functionality enabled.

Later, too will be available as a pre-installed application on computers with Windows 10 from partner manufacturers such as LG. With this move, Google seeks to renew the image of Nearby Share and make it the default option for sharing files throughout the ecosystem of mobile and desktop devices.

Advantages of Quick Share

Nearby Share

The main advantage that Quick Share will offer is the possibility of sharing content quickly and easily between a wider variety of Android devices, including phones, tablets, Chromebooks and more.

By unifying the efforts of Google and Samsung, users will not have to worry about whether the device they want to transfer a file to has Nearby Share or Quick Share. They will simply use Quick Share and that's it.

In addition, Collaboration with PC manufacturers will allow these file sharing capabilities to be extended from mobile to desktop. For example, users will be able to share photos from their phone directly to their Windows PC without the need for cables.

Now that Nearby Share will be Quick Share, file transfer on Android will change forever. Users will be able to share content seamlessly across a wide range of devices with this mobile platform, as well as Windows PCs and Chromebooks.

We will have to wait to find out how Quick Share will be received and if it actually manages to become the default option for sharing files in the Android ecosystem. In Android Guías We believe this collaboration between Google and Samsung is a great step towards that vision.
